Heil Hitler?

Looking back to the late 1930's and into the times during the World War II I saw a lot of politicking going on.  As I watched the movie "Triumph of the Will" I saw the people gathered and chanting during the many speeches of Hitler.  It was memorizing and exhausting all in the same while watching this film.  This film was made for the support of the Nazi party and it was full of video footage of marches, speeches, crowds gathered, flags, and Nazi signs showed over and over and over again.  It was like a video to brainwash you and corrupt your mind until you conformed into their ways of thinking or on the other hand scare and intimidate you of their massive power and support.
It was amazing the support the Führer, Adolf Hitler received through all of Germany. It was shocking to see these young children so excited just to see and maybe touch the hands of this Chancellor of Germany.  To think that these young minds were twisted into thinking what he stood for was right is just baffling.
When I step back and away from my own beliefs and thoughts on what this man was and what he stood for I can see where this is not far from today's political world. Listening to these speeches and watching the hundreds and thousands of people come to see Hitler speak was not unlike our Presidential Conventions that we have today in America.  (Not to say that either Democratic party or Republican party members are anything like Hitler)
When you really step back I think you could actually see yourself believing what this man is saying and be swayed into his reasoning.  I watched both the Republican and Democratic campaigns and regardless of my political preference I could see where people would believe either sides arguments.  They are people who know how to speak to other people and get them to believe and support whatever it is they are "selling".
At first I was really contemplating why in the world we would watch such a film, but as you really break down what message it is they are sending, I now understand.  From a visual aspect of Politics it is moving and really makes a strong statement especially for that time period.

  1. I am very glad you made the connection between our political system and the situation in Germany in 1934. Yes, the players are very different and so is the message, but some aspects of the political spectacle are remarkably similar. Keep in mind that in 1934, Hitler was not yet the firmly in power. He still felt a need to convince the German public. The film was supposed to function as a documentary of the Nazi Party Convention in Nuremberg.
